Iran has produced 17 kilograms of 20%-enriched uranium and can produce as much as it needs, the country's nuclear chief said on Wednesday.
"Iran can enrich uranium to any level it wishes... we have so far produced 17 kg of uranium enriched to 20% and we can produce up to 5 kg of the fuel each month," Ali Akbar Salehi, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, told ISNA.
He added that Iran was not going to turn its entire uranium stockpile into 20%-enriched fuel but that it reserved "the right to enrich fuel to any level as may be needed."
He also said Iran was building a heavy water reactor and would produce a new generation of centrifuges.
The UN Security Council approved on June 9 the fourth round of economic sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program, including tougher financial controls and an expanded arms embargo.
