Russia's Emergencies Ministry sent a plane with humanitarian aid to Pakistan severely affected by floods, a ministry spokeswoman, Irina Andrianova, said on Tuesday.

At least 1,600 people have died during the floods in Pakistan with some 20 million affected by the disaster. The floods, caused by the heavy monsoon rains, were the most severe in 80 years. Thousands of houses were destroyed and entire villages were washed out.

"Following President [Dmitry] Medvedev's order, the Emergencies Ministry sent to the Pakistani capital of Islamabad an emergency plane with humanitarian aid on board for those affected by the floods," Andrianova said.

She said the 36 tons of humanitarian aid included tents, blankets, diesel generators and canned meat.
