Taliban fighters launched an attack on a U.S. military base in eastern Afghanistan on Saturday morning, the regional police chief said.
Some 30 fighters armed with grenade launchers and automatic weapons attacked the Forward Operating Base Salerno base in Khost province, south-east of the capital Kabul, Adbul Hakim Ishaqzai said.
He also told journalists 11 Taliban militants had been killed as the attack was repelled. There are no reports of U.S. casualties.
Reports say Camp Chapman, a CIA base in the same area, was also targeted, although there has been no official confirmation of this.
A Taliban spokesman earlier said that suicide bombers were involved in the attacks.
