Afghan Deputy Prosecutor General Fazel Ahmad Faqiryar engaged in fighting corruption in top echelons of power, resigned in accordance with a decree by Afghan President Hamid Karzai, a source close to the Afghan Prosecutor's Office said.
According to the official line, which is not yet disclosed, the 72-year-old Fakiryar "went into retirement", however the top official has considered the dismissal a response to his "real fight with corruption" in the Karzai administration, the source said.
The prosecutor said he wanted to continue doing his work.
Earlier, Faqiryar has said he has a list including names of 18 Afghan ministers involved in corrupt practices.
Faqiryar's resignation is likely to be officially announced later on Sunday, the source said.
