Russia does not totally agree with U.S. national security doctrine, though both countries share a concern with key issues in the document, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Wednesday.
The United States published an updated version of its 2006 National Security Strategy on May 28, outlining the basic principles of security in the country.
"We cannot totally agree on the U.S. national security strategy, unveiled in May. It contains a lot of traditional, outdated elements of foreign policy philosophy," Lavrov said in an address to the Moscow State Institute for International Relations, adding that both countries shared the idea of sustainable, gradual development.
The new U.S. national security doctrine emphasizes a stronger domestic economy and broader cooperation with other countries to face the threats and challenges of the 21st century, in contrast with the security doctrines adopted by the Bush administration, which had a more unilateral approach to America's involvement in global affairs.
The doctrine also outlines the development of U.S. defense capability, nuclear non-proliferation and homeland security as top priorities.
Lavrov said Russia, as well the United States, considered global terrorism as the main threat to its national security.
He welcomed the doctrine's inclusion of the principles of multilateral cooperation, multi-vector diplomacy, a democratic and equitable world order and combating threats to international security.
