Belarusian police have detained six suspects in a firebomb attack on the Russian Embassy in Minsk, a spokesman for the capital's police department said on Monday.

"Six people were detained during the investigation," Alexander Lastovsky said, adding that charges of arson had been filed against them.

He said that the detainees may be behind other similar incidents in the Belarusian capital.

Unidentified assailants threw two fire bombs onto the premises of the Russian Embassy in Minsk on August 30. There were no casualties but one of the bombs hit a car. The incident resulted in a diplomatic spat between the two ex-Soviet neighbors.

A day after, Russia strongly condemned the attack, accusing "certain forces" of trying to "bring distrust and tensions to [Russian-Belarusian] bilateral relations." Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko retaliated by saying that "thugs and scoundrels" from Moscow may be to blame.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov dismissed the remark as "obscene" last Friday.
