The United Nations Security Council and the European Parliament strongly condemned terrorist attack in South Russia's Vladikavkaz which left at least 17 people dead.

A suicide bomber on a Volga car blew himself up at a market in Vladikavkaz, the capital of the North Caucasus republic of North Ossetia, killing at least 17 people and injuring more than 160. The bombing is the latest in a series of terrorist attacks that have rocked the troubled North Caucasus in recent weeks, including a suicide attack on a military camp in Dagestan.

The Security Council said in a statement adopted on Saturday that it "condemned in the strongest terms the terrorist attack that occurred in Vladikavkaz."

The 15-nation body also expressed "deep sympathy and condolences to the victims of the heinous act of terrorism and to the families, people and government of Russia."

European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek also issued a statement condemning the attack.

"A market full of innocent people is not a war-field. The bomb attacks and violence must stop in the North Caucasus. The militant violence and the hostility between various ethnic and religious groups in the region should come to a peaceful end," he said.

According to the recent health ministry data, a total of 161 people were injured in the attack. A total of 109 people were hospitalized, and seven of them remain in critical condition.

"A total of 161 people were injured, 14 people died on site and three died in hospitals," a health ministry official, Olga Krivonos, said.
