Iran warns Russia over failure to deliver S-300 missile systems
The U.S. welcomes the Russian president's decree to prohibit the delivery of S-300 air defense missile systems and other weapons to Iran, a White House official said.
National Security Council spokesman Mike Hammer welcomed the move as a "faithful and robust implementation of UN Security Council resolution 1929" of June 9, 2010, which imposes an additional set of sanctions on the Islamic Republic over its controversial nuclear program.
The presidential decree, which includes a ban on sales of battle tanks, armored vehicles, large-caliber artillery systems, warplanes, military helicopters, ships and missiles, is part of measures Russia is taking to comply with the resolution.
The U.S. official added that the Russian president has demonstrated leadership "on holding Iran accountable to its international obligations from start to finish."
"This continues to demonstrate how Russia and the United States are cooperating closely on behalf of our mutual interests, and global security," he said.
Russia signed an $800 million contract on delivery to Iran of S-300 systems to equip at least five battalions in late 2007. The contract's implementation had so far been delayed. Experts are considering whether the missiles fall under the sanctions imposed on Iran by the UN Security Council in June.
Israel and the United States had voiced concerns over Russia's plans to supply high-precision S-300 systems, capable of destroying aircraft at ranges of 150 km (90 miles) and at altitudes of up to 27 km (17 miles), to Iran. No such systems have been delivered to the Islamic Republic yet.

- pcfGiving up traditional allies03:29, 23/09/2010So Russia is abandoning its traditional allies in the Middle East to get aligned on the Zionist USA ? What a bitter disappointment.
- mrgenieTraditional Allies?11:52, 23/09/2010You obviously have no idea what is "traditional" or "Ally" as Iran is neither to Russia. Actually, in WWII Iran and Turkey planned to support Adolf Hitler by invading Soviet Union. That's not what I would call a traditional ally.
It’s more a relation that arose with the fall of the Shah: ”The enemy of my enemy is my friend” We all know this is a nice saying, but has not much to do with the reality. It’s nothing about friendship, it’s just an expression pointing out, as long as the enemy exists, and we stick together.
But since this Yankee Crazy Wild Horse, Mr. Bush the warmongering fool, is not in power anymore, and public opinions both in US and EU don’t see a thread in Russia anymore, as well as more and more Russians want peaceful relations with Europe and America, we do see tensions reducing and cooperation enlarging.
Thus, these view from Iran: ”Kill all Israelis, death to all Zionist and their friends and other states who maintain peaceful relations with Israel, and many worse things the Iranian President has spoken out in public which I won’t repeat here because they are simply to insulting to anyone to repeat”
Are simply not shared by the Russian population! Maybe some Russians do want to kill and destroy a few Million Jews and their Allies in Europe and America. But I know the vast majority of the Russians do not want to kill all Jews and their allies in Europe and America. Thus, the Russian people don’t share this mutual “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” understanding which existed between Soviet Union and Iran anymore.
This now simply being reflected by Putin and Medwedew. These times are behind us where Soviet Union supported Iran’s views to kill all Jews and their allies. Russia is surely not the puppet of Iran. Maybe you want that? But Russia is mature enough to follow their own foreign policy, which seems to be more and more to become a bridge of mutual understanding and cooperation with China, Europe, Japan, USA and other states. A political misled Iran is simply not Russia’s friend! Maybe Russia doesn’t even need friends! You can maintain good relations with your neighbors, but doesn’t mean you need to be friends!
Friendship requires support in hard times as well. Russia is self-maintaining! It can maintain good relations with surrounding countries, and simply stick away from struggles between those countries. And just maintain good relations to all of them, including Iran! But simply as neighbor! Personally, I think this mature way of maintaining good relations to everyone is very good for Russia. To tell Iran:” We’ve been your puppet for a long time, but now it’s over, we will now follow our own course and not being dictated by Teheran how to proceed on international relations” will be very good for Russia to maintain peace and good relations with all surrounding countries. But only time will tell if Russia once again must listen to the Mullahs in Teheran, who support Islamic separatists in Southern Russia, or if it is wise of Putin and Medwedew to put Russia on the international map as a self aware, self-maintaining, good neighbor.
Either way, above is my opinion. But that you are wrong about Teheran being a “friend” of Russia is a plain fact. They never been a friend, they even been enemies over the centuries. And on top of that, the only thing Russia and Iran had in common was during the cold war the only fact that Teheran wanted to kill all Jews and this means destroying the USA first, while Soviet Union actually didn’t want to kill all Jews, but could use Iran in case of a war with the USA. And this is the only thing Russians and Iranians have in common. If that is enough for you for declaring someone your friend. I feel pity for your friends, because friendship for me means a hell of a lot more then just sharing the mutual support during a fight with a 3rd party- pcffriends and enemies12:34, 23/09/2010With the USA as a "friend" and an "ally", you will need no enemies.
The USA is the best enemy Russia can have:instigating unrest in Georgia, stationing missiles in Poland, directed against Russia, using HAARP to create wildfires and draught -
Congrattulations, Russia, you have chosen the best enemy ever for an ally.
- arnoldvinette@yahoo.comPositive Russia - US - NATO co-operation21:55, 23/09/2010This shows Russia's resolve to be a strong member of NATO.
This will be a set back to Iran who was hoping to have a strong missile defense against a possible US / NATO attack to disable its nuclear ambitions.
This sudden change in defensive capability may change Iran's stance on its nuclear ambitions and encourage a more diplomatic adherence to NATO requests. We will see.
Perhaps Russia can use this to their advantage to encourage some NATO countries to purchase some of their new 5th generation MiG-35 fighter jets. I know that Canada is looking for some new aerospace jobs and perhaps in exchange for purchasing a set quantity of MiG-35 fighter jets, some MiG-35 manufacturing aerospace jobs can be created in Canada?

A recent proposal sent to Canadian Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon for $100 million will see the creation of 1,025 jobs in Ottawa / Gatineau Canada for the purpose of processing 5 million pieces of student artwork from Russia for a series of "Russian Kids Art Album eBooks". The goal to promote better understanding of modern Russia, its people, culture, traditions and modern lifestyle. If successful the project will involve Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, eventually gaining support from President Dmitry Medvedev and Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. - sagbotgamot(no title)16:50, 27/09/2010it means that Russia and the USA are becoming friends. This could be a ploy. Something must be going on between Putin and Obama which I think could make the US corporate nervous. While they welcome Russia’s move, I am sure they are worried what would Russia demand in exchange for withdrawing the S-300 contract with Iran. This is a new game to watch. It has just started.
