The Israel Antiquities Authority and Google on Tuesday announced plans to digitalize the Dead Sea Scrolls and put them online, allowing widespread access to the documents.

Specialists will upload images of all 900 manuscripts, comprising 30,000 fragments. The texts will include transcriptions, translations and a bibliography.

To implement the project, the scrolls are being photographed for the first time since the 1950s.

The 2,000-year-old text Dead Sea Scrolls are considered one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of the 20th century, as they include the oldest known surviving copies of many Biblical documents.

The Antiquities Authority will use innovative technology to create digitized images, mirroring the quality of the documents themselves and preserving them for future generations.

The Leon Levy Foundation is financing the project, dubbed The Leon Levy Dead Sea Scrolls Digital Library, with additional funding from the Arcadia Foundation.
