Iran's nuclear program should not impede the Islamic republic's gas cooperation with the European Union, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Thursday.

Iran's nuclear program should not impede the Islamic republic's gas cooperation with the European Union, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Thursday.

"Europe sees the nuclear program as a problem," the Azerbaijani Trend news agency quoted Ahmadinejad as saying at a press conference in Baku. "This should not be an obstacle for the purchase of gas."

If the EU wants to import Iranian gas it should compromise, Ahmadinejad said.

"If Europe needs gas, we are ready to negotiate," he said.

According to BP, Iran holds 137.6 billion barrels of recoverable oil and 29.61 billion cubic meters of natural gas.

Iran is under four sets of UN sanctions over a refusal to suspend uranium enrichment, which the West fears may be used to build nuclear weapons.

Iran says it is aimed at pursuing civilian nuclear energy.
