European Council President Herman Van Rompuy called on the international community on Thursday to support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia.

European Council President Herman Van Rompuy called on the international community on Thursday to support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia.

"I underline the European Union's continuing full support for the security, stability, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia," Van Rompuy said after talks with Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili in Brussels.

"We expect the entire international community to do the same," he added.

He said the EU was committed to being "fully engaged in conflict resolution measures," referring to Georgia's 2008 war with Russia over the former Georgian republic of South Ossetia.

"We have already mobilized several EU instruments for this purpose: the Geneva discussions, the EU monitoring mission, assistance to internally displaced persons, to name a few," Van Rompuy said.

He said the only way to ensure lasting stability in the Southern Caucasus is through "peaceful means and the full mobilization of diplomatic and political efforts."

Russia recognized the independence of South Ossetia and another republic, Abkhazia, days after ceasefire.
