The reports and other documents of the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See recently published by Wikileaks be evaluated carefully, the Vatican said in an official communique on Saturday.
The Vatican said the reliability of these reports must "be evaluated carefully and with great prudence, bearing this circumstance in mind."
According to the communique, Wikileaks publications "cannot be considered as expressions of the Holy See itself, nor as exact quotations of the words of its officials."
The cable released on the Wikileaks website was entitled "Sex abuse scandal strains Irish-Vatican relations, shakes up Irish church, and poses challenges for the Holy See".
According to the deputy Irish ambassador to the Holy See, the Irish Government gave in to Vatican pressure and granted Church officials immunity in exchange for testifying, a U.S. diplomat wrote in one of the cables.
Ambassador Noel Fahey apparently told another U.S. diplomat that the sex abuse scandal was a tricky one to manage.
The Irish Government wanted "to be seen as co-operating with the investigation" because its own education department was implicated, another cable said.
The whistleblowing site has recently published part of over 250,000 secret U.S. embassy cables. WikiLeaks came under increasing international pressure after the publication, but world leaders have tried to downplay the adverse impact of the leak.
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange was arrested on December 7 on sexual assault charges and was denied bail.
Former WikiLeaks insiders intends to launch a new site, Openleaks, on Monday.
