Ankara is not opposed to Greek plans to build a wall across its border with Turkey to prevent illegal immigration, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Saturday.

Ankara is not opposed to Greek plans to build a wall across its border with Turkey to prevent illegal immigration, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Saturday.

"As a matter of fact, it's not right to call that 'a wall' - it's just a barrier," Erdogan said according to Sofia News Agency.

The Turkish prime minister said he was alarmed by the traffic figures his Greek counterpart George Papandreou had cited during a meeting in the northeastern city of Erzurum on Friday.

Greece has announced plans to build a 12-kilometer fence along part of its border with Turkey to prevent illegal immigrants from crossing.

Public Order Minister Christos Papoutsis said more than 100,000 people had entered Greece illegally last year.
