An Iranian Airlines jet with 95 passengers on board crashed near the city of Urumiyeh in the northwest of the country, Iran's Mehrnews reported on Sunday, citing Reza Nakhjavani, the director of Iran's Civil Aviation Organization.

According to the Iranian Fars news agency, at least 50 people were rescued from the wreckage. The agency also reported that the aircraft was a Dutch-made Fokker-100.

Iran's Emergencies Ministry has confirmed that 50 passengers were rescued.

However, Mehrnews reported that the aircraft was a Boeing-727.

Other news agencies, including Reuter and the Associated Press, have reported 156 and 105 passengers respectively citing other state news agencies.
