MOSCOW, January 13 (RIA Novosti) - Russia has put forward an initiative to hold a Middle East Quartet meeting on the sidelines of the security conference to be held in Munich in early February, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Thursday.
As Israeli-Palestinian peace talks came to a deadlock in the past months, state officials from the Quartet of Middle East mediators called for a top-level meeting in an attempt to put the peace process back on track.
"Today we are discussing the Quartet's meeting in the near future. We proposed to meet on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference in early February, where all Quartet members, ministers and the UN Secretary General will have an opportunity to hold such a session," Lavrov said.
He said Arab League representatives should be invited to attend the meeting of the quartet, comprising the United Nations, the United States, the European Union, and Russia.
Ideally, Israelis and Palestinians should also take part, the Russian foreign minister added.
