Former Ukrainian president and current opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko has been summoned to the country's Prosecutor General's Office for questioning over his poisoning case initiated amid the previous presidential campaign in 2004, the press service of Yushchenko's Our Ukraine party said on Thursday.

Then-presidential candidate Yushchenko was hospitalized in Austria in early September 2004 during the election campaign in which he ran against Viktor Yanukovych, the current Ukrainian president, over health problems. Doctors said Yushchenko had been poisoned with dioxin.

During Yushchenko's presidency, the Prosecutor General's Office repeatedly said that Yushchenko's "deliberate poisoning" was a "fully proven fact."

In November, Yanukovych, who came to power in February, appointed Viktor Pshonka as the country's new prosecutor general.

"Yushchenko was summoned for the first time as a complainant since the administration of the Prosecutor General's Office changed. Before this, the Prosecutor General's Office sent him requests to undergo blood tests for additional expertise," the press service said in a statement.

Yushchenko is to appear before prosecutors at 10:00 a.m. local time (08:00 GMT) on Friday.
