A symbolic monument to the victims of anti-government riots in Egypt has been installed on Cairo's central Tahrir Square, the hub of the protest demonstrations that overthrew President Hosni Mubarak.

The temporary monument, constructed from concrete blocks that protesters used to build barricades around the square, is decorated with flowers, newspaper cuttings and pictures of those who fell victim to brutal clashes between opposition activists, police and Mubarak supporters.

A total of 302 people were killed in the protests, which broke out on January 25 and lasted almost three weeks, and up to 5,000 were injured in the uprising.

"These people were very young, but they were not afraid to act against the authorities, to lift their heads proudly," a local man who identified himself as a "citizen of Egypt" said while laying a bouquet of flowers at the monument. "We will always remember them as national heroes and be proud of them."

On Sunday, the Egyptian Army helped clear the square from rubbish and tents that protesters used as a night shelter during the demonstrations. Traffic through the square has been restored, and the remaining opposition activists, now celebrating their victory, have been edged out to roadsides.

CAIRO, February 14 (RIA Novosti)

Mubarak stepped down on Friday after up to 10 million protesters took to the streets in Cairo and other cities across Egypt in a bid to bring down Mubarak's 30-year-old rule. Mubarak handed all authority to the military, which pledged to transfer power to a new government that would be formed following parliamentary elections due in September.
