Russian specialists from Rosenergoatom and the Nuclear Safety Institute (IBRAE) will fly to Japan together with a group of rescuers to monitor the situation with the country's nuclear power plants, IBRAE's spokesman Rafael Arutyunyan said on Monday.
Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated from the area around Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant, where a blast hit reactor No. 3 on Monday morning following an explosion on Saturday.
Some 10,000 people are feared to have been killed by a powerful earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan on Friday.
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev called Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan on Monday and personally expressed his condolences over the earthquake and tsunami.
Specialists have monitored the radiation level in the Russian Far East following the explosions. Alexander Frolov, the head of Russian Federal Service for Hydrometeorology, said that according to the results of the monitoring, the radiation level is normal.
"In some areas it is even a little lower. The weather situation is favorable for Russia because all of the [radioactive] emissions, if there are any, are being blown over the [Pacific] Ocean," Frolov said.
