The Egyptian authorities have ordered the detention of the country's former president, Hosni Mubarak, amid an investigation into alleged corruption and abuse of office charges, national media said on Wednesday.

The ex-leader and his two sons were summoned to a Cairo court earlier this week. The sons were flown to a prison near Cairo on Wednesday, the MENA news agency said.

The ex-president was rushed to hospital with heart problems on Tuesday, and doctors banned his transportation to Cairo. He was questioned in his hospital ward and will stay there for entire 15-day detention period, the Masrawy news portal reported.

Mubarak, 82, had been living in his villa in the Sharm el-Sheikh resort since stepping down and handing power to the military last month following a popular uprising. He and his family have been banned from leaving the country.

They are suspected of corruption, illicitly acquired wealth, squandering of public funds and abuse of authority. Their connection to the heavy-handed crackdown on protesters earlier this year is also being probed. The ex-president publicly dismissed all charges.
