The U.S. is trying to get Russia accepted into the World Trade Organization (WTO) by the end of the year, a top White House official said on Friday.
"It's not a gift to Russia. We think it’s in our national interest," Michael McFaul, senior director of Russian and Eurasian Affairs at the United States National Security Council, said in a speech at the Peterson Institute for International Economics.
Russia, the only large economy outside the global trade club, has been negotiating its entry into the WTO for 17 years.
McFaul said that Russia’s entry into the WTO would make its economy stronger and more transparent. This, he said, would be good for the U.S.

- arnoldvinette@yahoo.comIn everyone's best interests I agree 100%04:54, 16/04/2011I could not agree with Michael McFaul, senior director of Russian and Eurasian Affairs at the United States National Security Council.
It is in everyone's best interests to get Russia part of the WTO (World Trade Organization) as soon as possible this year.
Russia is a huge economy poised on the brink of rapid expansion. It is in everyone's best interests to get Russia approved into the WTO.
Then let the commerce begin!
Russia of course has already made huge strides, but there is so much more to be done and so much potential.
This in turn will create millions of Russian jobs and millions more outside of Russia.
And I think that everyone will agree that both Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin have shown REAL RESTRAINT during the current Libyan crisis, an ally with whom they have decided not to get militarily involved with to stop a bad situation from getting worse.
So the success of Russia joining the WTO this year in 2011 and the also the elimination of Russian Visas to both North America and Europe.
This to is in everyone's best interests.
