Al Jazeera news agency has demanded the release from captivity in Syria its journalist Dorothy Parvaz, after Damascus admitted holding her.

"We are worried about Dorothy's welfare, security and safety. Syria should release her immediately," Al Jazeera said.

Parvaz, who holds Iranian, U.S. and Canadian citizenship, was detained on arrival in Damascus a week ago, and has had no contact with the outside world since, Al Jazeera said.

The Parvaz family has also called for her release. "Dorothy is a dearly loved daughter, sister and fiancee...We need to know where she is. We need to know that she is comfortable. We need to know that she is safe."

Syria has cracked down on the activities of journalists in the wake of the recent political unrest in the country.
