Saudi Arabia has introduced a ban on vegetable imports from the European Union over E. coli bacteria fears until the source of infection is identified, Al-Jazeera said on Tuesday.

The bacteria, first found in Germany, has already killed 20 people in Europe and affected people in ten EU countries.

Saudi agriculture experts said the ban would not have any serious impact on the Saudi vegetable market as the country imports vegetables only from two EU countries - the Netherlands and France.

On Friday, Lebanon suspended EU vegetable imports and increased supplies from Syria and Jordan to make up for the deficit. Qatar followed suit on Saturday by banning cucumbers, tomatoes and salad supplies from Spain and Germany.

Russia's sanitary watchdog has also banned vegetable imports from the EU.

The bacteria were originally believed to come from cucumbers in Spain but now suspicions have fallen on bean sprouts from Germany. The final results of lab research are expected later on Tuesday.
