Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev on Wednesday proposed the creation of a regional security group within the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev on Wednesday proposed the creation of a regional security group within the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

"I propose creating a conference on the resolution of territorial and regional conflicts to take preventive action in potential trouble spots within the SCO area of responsibility," he said addressing a six-nation summit in Astana.

He said the conference could be instrumental in dealing with conflicts such as the one witnessed last year in Kyrgyzstan.

"We observed conflicts and coups in neighboring Kyrgyzstan and our organization was unable to do anything," he said.

The leaders of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan are meeting to discuss regional stability and security, including the fight against terrorism and drug trafficking.

Iran, Mongolia, India and Pakistan have observer status in the organization.
