Russia on Tuesday urged Western powers to respond to a sanctioned gathering of Nazi war veterans in Estonia.

The meeting of the 20th Estonian SS division in northeast Estonia on July 30 provoked an angry condemnation from Moscow. More than 26 million Soviet citizens died at the hands of the Nazis during World War II.

"The criminal connivance of the Estonian authorities in organizing such events should not go unnoticed by Estonia's partners in the European Union and NATO, as well as special international organizations," a Foreign Ministry statement read.

It also said the event "installed the ideas of Neo-Nazism, xenophobia and racism in young people."

On a visit to the United States last week, Estonian Prime Minister Andrus Ansip said the meetings "had nothing to do with Nazi ideology."

The next gathering is due for August 3-6.
