A Kiev district court on Monday granted former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko's request to summon her husband and daughter as defense witnesses.

The ex-premier is being tried on abuse of office charges in connection with a gas deal signed with Russia in 2009. She was taken into custody on Friday during a court hearing. She says the charges against her are politically motivated.

Tymoshenko's lawyer also requested the court to accept as evidence a recent statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry which says that "all the deals on gas supplies were drawn up according to the legislation of the two countries and international law."

The court rejected a release petition filed on Tymoshenko's behalf earlier on Monday.
