Violence which began in the British capital of London at the weekend over the fatal shooting of a young man by police has spread to the eastern district of Hackney, British media reports.

Protesters are destroying local shops and breaking windows. Media said the trouble began when a policeman stopped a young man.

British Home Secretary Theresa May has called the riots "sheer criminality" and added that those responsible will be brought to justice.

"These people will be brought to justice, they will be made to face the consequences of their actions and I call on all members of local communities to work with the police constructively," May said adding that there is no excuse for "looting and thuggery."

Some 300 people gathered outside a police station in Tottenham on Saturday night to demand "justice" after 29-year-old private taxi driver Mark Duggan, a father of four, was killed in Thursday's shootout with police.

At least 11 people, including eight police officers, were injured during a protest in northern London, health officials said on Sunday.
