A higher court in Kiev on Wednesday refused to annul a decision to take Ukraine's former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko into custody.

Tymoshenko, 50, is on trial for alleged abuse of office in striking gas deals with Russia in 2009. Last Friday, she was detained on the prosecutors' request.

She says the charges against her are politically motivated.
