The death toll in Syria's Mediterranean port city of Latakia reached 30 on Monday, as a bloody clampdown on protesters intensified, the Al Arabiya TV channel reported.

At least 21 were reported killed in Latakia on Sunday as Syrian tanks swept into Latakia and warships fired weapons just off the shore, according to local media.

The shelling came amid reports from opposition groups that security forces had opened fire in residential neighborhoods in the city. The crackdown in Latakia is the latest in a series of military actions to target protesters calling for the ouster of President Bashar al-Assad.

State-run news agency SANA denied that Navy had attacked Latakia.

Syria has been rocked by mass protests demanding reforms and the resignation of al-Assad for almost six months. Pressure from international powers has mounted to end the crackdown, with condemnations from Egypt, Iraq, Russia and Turkey.

About 2,000 civilians are thought to have been killed since protests began in the southern city of Deraa in mid-March. According to government data, over 500 servicemen and security officers were also killed.
