Syrian President Bashar al Assad said he expected the parliamentary elections in the country to be held in February 2012, Sky News reported on Sunday citing state TV.

The presidential election was last planned to be held before the end of the year 2011.

He said the situation in Syria may seem dangerous, but that his regime was "able to deal with it".

Syria has been rocked by mass protests demanding reforms and the resignation of Assad for almost six months. Pressure from international powers has mounted to end the crackdown.

About 2,000 civilians are thought to have been killed since protests began in the southern city of Deraa in mid-March. According to government data, over 500 servicemen and security officers were also killed.
