Hundreds of people held protests in the rebel stronghold of Benghazi on Saturday, calling for a shake-up of Libya's ruling National Transitional Council (NTC).

Most of the protesters are activists of the country's nascent political groups, mostly from eastern parts of the country, our correspondent says.

The protests come just two weeks after the ouster of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

"The first martyrs of the revolution were from Benghazi but some of the current leadership just took advantage of the situation and changed sides," said Rasha, a young woman holding a handwritten banner.

"We demand new faces in Libya's politics. Some of the NTC executive committee have blood on their hands," said another protester, Khaled. "They are thieves who should be put to trial."

The NTC came under harsh criticism in a memorandum signed by some 56 political organizations, saying its governance plan did not meet the desires of the liberal people.

NTC vice-chairman Abdel Hafiz Ghoga acknowledged the receipt of the document but said the council could not consider it until rebel forces gained full control of the country.

Gaddafi loyalists have been putting up fierce resistance in Bani Walid, one of the four towns still controlled by the Libyan dictator.

The NTC has given Bani Walid and the other loyalist-held towns until Saturday to surrender.

Fierce fighting has also continued near Gaddafi's home town of Sirte.
