A Norwegian court has ruled to prolong for eight weeks the detention of Anders Breivik, the gunman behind twin attacks in July that left 77 people dead.

Four of these eight weeks the gunman will spend in solitary confinement, Judge Anne Margrethe Lund announced after a closed hearing on Monday attended by the 32-year-old right-wing extremist.

Breivik planned to give a speech at his the hearing, his defense lawyer Geir Lippestad said.

"He has announced he wants to give information or read something to the court," Lippestad, told reporters as he arrived at the Oslo District Court.

Lippestad said he didn't know what the 32-year-old right-wing extremist was planning to say in the closed hearing, his third court appearance since the bombing in downtown Oslo and shooting massacre at a youth camp on Utoya island.
