Libyan rebel forces have discovered a chemical weapons stockpile in the country's south, Radio Sawa reported on Thursday.

"Revolutionary forces have discovered and taken control of a chemical weapons depot of Muammar Gaddafi's army in the town of Jufra," Fathi Bashar, a military spokesman for the National Transitional Council (NTC), said.

The desert area, some 700 km south of the capital, Tripoli, was seized during an offensive against Gaddafi loyalists several days ago.

Ahmet Uzumcu, director general of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), said earlier this month Libya's remaining chemical weapon stockpiles were secure.

OPCW inspectors will return to Libya to oversee the destruction of Gaddafi's poison gas supplies "when conditions allow," he added.

The watchdog believes Libya has around 9.5 ton of mustard gas stored at a secret location.

In 2004 Gaddafi agreed to dismantle his chemical weapons. In 2010 Libya destroyed about half of its stockpile.
