The roof of the main Euro 2012 stadium in Ukraine briefly caught fire during a ceremony to open the renovated venue on Saturday.

The roof plastic three by three meters caught fire during a 3D show attended by about 70,000 people.

Sparks and drops of molten plastic fell to upper grandstands, but no one was injured. The fire was extinguished in some 15 minutes.

The Olimpiiskyi stadium in Kiev, the venue of the Euro 2012 final on July 1, underwent a three-year long refurbishment at the cost estimated at almost $600 million, the Ukrainian News portal said.

The stadium is to host its first match - a friendly between the Ukrainian and German national football teams - on November 11.

Ukraine and Poland will co-host the 2012 European football championships on June 8 - July 1, 2012. Along with Kiev, games will also be played in Lvov, Kharkov and Donetsk.
