The UK Ministry of Defense has said that a British soldier was killed on Saturday during security operations with Afghan police in the Nahr-e Saraj region of the Helmand province.
“Whilst protecting a checkpoint, his team came under insurgent small arms fire, during which he received a fatal gunshot wound,” the ministry said in a statement.
Since the beginning of the year, 485 international forces have been killed in insurgent attacks in Afghanistan.
The U.S.-led coalition has been fighting Taliban militants in Afghanistan since 2001, but attacks on both foreign and Afghan troops, police and civilians are still frequent, with most of them taking place in volatile southern regions.
