Former Libyan strongman Muammar Gaddafi died of a gunshot wound to the head, following the results of an autopsy completed by doctors on Sunday, the CNN reported, referring to the chief pathologist.

Dr. Othman el-Zentani did not disclose additional findings, such as whether the findings revealed if Gaddafi suffered the wound in crossfire or at close-range, the CNN said.

The autopsy was performed at a Misrata hospital in the presence of officials from the prosecutor's office, Zentani said.

Autopsies were also conducted on the bodies of Gaddafi's son, Mutassim, and his former defense minister, Abu Baker Yunis, the CNN said.

Gaddafi, who had ruled Libya for 42 years, was captured and killed by the National Transitional Council fighters on Thursday near his home town of Sirte.

There is still much controversy over the circumstances surrounding his death.

Officials from Libya's National Transitional Council claim he was caught in crossfire between loyalists and anti-Gaddafi troops but witnesses say he was shot dead point-blank by young rebels after being captured.
