Toppled Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi was buried early on Tuesday in a secret desert location, Al-Jazeera television reported, quoting officials from the country’s ruling National Transitional Council.

The bodies of Gaddafi, his son Mutassim and a former aide were moved from a commercial freezer in a warehouse area of Misrata on Monday.

The Assosiated Press news agency said the three men had been buried together.

Gaddafi’s body, which had been on display at a shopping center in Misrata for four days, was initially planned to have been handed over to his relatives for burial, but the National Transitional Council later reversed its decision.

The location of the grave has been kept secret so that it does not become a shrine for the toppled Libyan dictator’s supporters.

Gaddafi, who ruled Libya for 42 years, died shortly after being captured alive by National Council fighters near his hometown of Sirte last week. The UN human rights office, as well as Russia and the United States, have called for a probe into deposed Libyan leader’s extrajudicial killing.
