A group of South Korean activists and North Korean defectors launched balloons carrying propaganda leaflets to the North on Wednesday, protesting the succession of power in the communist country, the Yonhap news agency reported.
Pyongyang is seeking to transfer power to Kim Jong-un, the youngest son of the late North Korean leader Kim Jong-il.
About 50 members of an emergency committee representing 37 of the country's human rights groups for North Korean defectors launched 10 balloons carrying millions of anti-North Korean leaflets from Imjingak, near the inter-Korean border.
The leaflets criticize the hereditary secession of power in the communist country.
"We will not sit idle while witnessing North Koreans suffer from oppression and hunger under autocratic leadership," said Park Sang-hak, an official with the committee, which formed in response to Kim's death.
"We call on the South Korean government as well as the international community to support 2,300 North Koreans who struggle to walk out of the yoke of slavery by the Kim dynasty and to regain their freedom and human rights.”
Kim Jong-il inherited the leadership of the isolated country from his father Kim Il-sung in 1994. A personality cult has been built up around the family, with Kim Il-sung known as the "Eternal President" and Kim Jong-il as the "Dear Leader." Kim Jong-un has just been designated the “Great Successor” in the country.
