Two Russians charged in Mexico with stealing a U.S. yacht, flew to Russia late on Tuesday, a spokesman for Russia’s embassy in Mexico said on Wednesday.
“They boarded an Air Berlin flight from Cancun with a transit in Germany, they are to land in Moscow early on January 26,” Maxim Okopny said.
The yacht, which was reported stolen from Florida last month, was detained in the Caribbean Sea by the Mexican naval forces on January 14. The two Russians, Oleg Denisov, 44, and Vladimir Galkin, 38, who were on board the vessel, have been arrested.
The men have maintained their innocence. In an interview with RIA Novosti, Denisov said he and his friend had rented the yacht for $20,000 from their acquaintance in Miami on December 23, 2011, adding that the vessel’s owner was aware of the deal.
The two men were released on a bail of about $40,000 and were allowed to leave Mexico for 30 days.
