Former presidential candidate of South Ossetia and opposition leader Alla Dzhioyeva was transferred on Monday from an emergency ward of a regional hospital to a regular ward, the chief doctor of the regional hospital Mairbek Kokoyev said.
Dzhioyeva was hospitalized last Thursday when law enforcers tried to take her to the General Prosecutor’s Office for questioning. She suffered a stroke and lost consciousness.
“Alla Dzhioyeva, diagnosed with hypertensive crisis, was examined by our specialists and transferred to a regular ward. She is in a better condition now. We will continue further intensive treatment to help her get better,” the doctor said.
Some media claim Dzhioyeva was hit over the head by a weapon, which South Ossetian police Head Valery Valiev denies.
South Ossetia’s former education Minister Dzhioyeva scored an unexpected win over Anatoly Bibilov, Russia’s favored candidate, in a runoff vote in November’s presidential elections in the Georgian breakaway territory of South Ossetia.
However, the region’s Supreme Court declared the results invalid after Bibilov accused Dzhioyeva of vote-rigging and barred her from the March elections. In response, she denounced the ruling and declared herself president.
The opposition leader and her supporters have been staging an ongoing protest against the cancellation of the results. She has repeatedly proclaimed herself the winner of the elections and South Ossetia's leader.
In one statement, she said that she was worried the situation would worsen and that authories and the security services were "preparing something to neutralize the beginnings of free-thinking that started to emerge in South Ossetia."
