At least 11 people were killed in Afghanistan on Friday, the fourth day of protests against the burning of Qurans by the U.S. soldiers, Al Jazeera reported.
The angered Afghans took to the streets on Tuesday shortly after Afghan workers noticed the U.S. soldiers at the Bagram airbase dumping books, including four copies of the Holy Quran, in a bin for burning garbage.
The agency said that Friday’s deaths brought the total number of killed in clashes with security forces since the beginning of protests to 25, including two U.S. soldiers.
The demonstrations were reported in 13 Afghan provinces including in the country’s capital of Kabul, where hundreds of protesters marched to President Hamid Karzai’s palace chanting ‘Death to America.’ Security forces were reported to open gunfire in the air to disperse the crowds.
The U.S. military officials quickly reacted on the burning by making apologies to Afghan President Hamid Karzai for the "improperly disposed" copies of Quran.
U.S. President Barack Obama sent an apology letter to Karzai on Thursday, saying that the books were burnt by mistake.
