Channeling a romantic pop hit from Soviet times, a Kazakhstan man ordered one million red roses for his wife for International Women’s Day on March 8, local media reported.

The man, whose name was withheld, had a spat with his wife and sought to make up to her, Express-K.kz news website said, without elaborating on the dispute.

The order for one million Dutch-grown roses was placed with a florist in the city of Kyzylorda in southern Kazakhstan and is to be delivered on March 8, the report said.

Local prices for roses on International Women’s Day, which is widely celebrated in former Soviet republics, ranged from 500 to 2,000 tenge ($3 to $13) per flower, which means the 1-million order could cost the caring husband between $3 million and $13 million, though he was promised a “very large discount,” Express-K.kz said.

The gesture is likely to strike a nostalgic chord in the heart of the recipient, given the “Million Roses” song popularized by Soviet pop diva Alla Pugacheva in 1982. The song, which tells a story of an artist trying to win a woman’s heart through the gift of flowers, sold upward of 6 million copies as a single, and the tune became a radio staple in post-Soviet countries.
