Earthquake of 7.8 Magnitude Hits Southern Mexico

Some 800 building were damaged in the southwest Mexican state of Guerrero after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit the southern part of the country on Tuesday, local authorities said.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake with the epicenter of about 115 miles east of Acapulco was followed by five aftershocks. Tremors were felt in other states of Mexico and in the country’s capital.

There are no reports of casualties and the ruined buildings in Guerrero include residential houses, schools and various public facilities.

The quake also damaged power lines leaving some 2.5 million people without electricity.

Last December a 6.7 earthquake also struck the state of Guerrero killing three people and inflicting damages to the local infrastructure.
