NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen on Friday welcomed Prime Minister Vladimir Putin’s adherence to good and stable relations with the North Atlantic organization.

“I recently spoke with president-elect Putin,” Rasmussen told the Brussels Forum.

“I told him that I look forward to continued engagement and constructive dialogue with Russia. And I was encouraged to hear him underline his commitment to good, stable relations with NATO.”

Cooperation with Russia is particularly important as “we face common concerns, and they are best addressed through common approaches,” he said.

Rasmussen earlier said he would meet with Putin after the inauguration of Russia’s new president but most likely not during the NATO-Russia Chicago summit in May.

    - namely peaceful relations and trade with each other. The EU accounted for 47.1% of Russia's foreign trade in 2010; Russia bought €86.1 billion from the EU and the EU bought €158.6 billion from Russia. "What common concerns"??? What cave are you living in? It is in both NATO's and Russia's vital interests to work towards becoming equal partners in both trade and in security.

NATO must learn to treat Russia with respect as an equal, including Russia in everything - including inter-operability of the European missile shield. What better way to commit to peace, than to depend upon each other for mutual defense?

For its part, Russia needs to learn to let go of a little of its institutional paranoia. With very few exceptions, no one in The West relates Russia with the USSR; they are seen as two completely separate entities, with Russia just wanting to live in peace just like everyone else. As president Medvedev said in response to Mitt Romney's foot-in-mouth disease "This is 2012, not the 1970's." The Cold War is over - and the human race won.

All this talk about how NATO is "the enemy" is arrant nonsense spouted by a handful of soviet dinosaurs, enraged at their own obsolescence and impending extinction. Let it go!
