The first group of UN observers who arrived in Syria earlier have proceeded to their mission - monitoring and making sure the country’s ceasefire is adhered to, UN Chief Ban Ki-moon said on Monday.

An advance team of six non-military monitors arrived in the capital Damascus on Sunday evening, the BBC reported.

The monitors’ mission follows a six-point plan to resolve the current political crisis in Syria, proposed by UN and Arab League envoy Kofi Annan and approved by the UN Security Council.

"The Syrian authorities must exercise maximum restraint" and "the opposition forces should also fully cooperate," Ban called on Syrians.

The ceasefire that formally came into force on Thursday in Syria is a part of the international community’s efforts to end a year of deadly clashes between opposition and government forces that have claimed over 9,000 lives, according to UN estimates.
