Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has blocked the social networking website Twitter on Sunday as it refused to remove materials that local authorities consider “anti-Islamic,” reported DawnNews channel.

Twiiter management refused to remove the materials that publicized a contest for blasphemous caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed on Facebook.

Facebook “understood Pakistan’s concerns” and agreed to block access to some materials. Twitter management refused to remove or close the posts with similar content, chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunication's Authority Mohammad Yaseen said.

“We have been negotiating with them (Twitter) until last night, but they did not agree to remove the stuff, so we had to block it,” said Yaseen. He added that Pakistan’s authority would unblock the site if the materials were removed.

In May 2010 a top court in Pakistan ordered to block Facebook over a similar competition. The site was unblocked after Facebook closed access to the particular page in Pakistan.

There were mass protests organized by members of radical Islamic groups, which demanded full ban of Facebook in Pakistan.
