Turkish security forces have foiled a plot to kidnap the head of the opposition Free Syrian Army (FSA), Riad al-Asaad, Milliyet daily reported on Monday.

According to Milliyet, Turkish authorities had arrested two Turks and a Syrian who had reportedly collaborated to kidnap the chief of the FSA, the opposition’s military wing.

FSA, led by the former colonel in President Bashar al-Assad’s Army, consists of Syrian opposition activists and deserters who are deployed in several Turkish regions bordering Syria.

All three suspects will face spy charges in favor of Syria, Milliyet said.

More than 9,000 people have been killed in Syria since the outbreak of the popular uprising against President Bashar al-Assad in March 2011, according to the UN.

Russia and China have twice vetoed UN Security Council resolutions over what Moscow called a pro-rebel bias since the start of the uprising against Assad, but have supported UN special envoy Kofi Annan’s peace plan.
