At least 30 people were injured after a powerful explosion hit the center of the Kenyan capital of Nairobi on Monday, the Daily Nation newspaper reported.

The blast occurred at an exhibition stall in Moi Avenue, one of the city's major roads, at 01:10 p.m. local time.

The blast's cause is unknown.

An eyewitness told the paper there was a huge blast as debris flew in different directions injuring people nearby.

Internal Security assistant minister Orwa Ojode who arrived at the scene said police were investigating the possibility of a "grenade attack."

Kenya has been hit by a series of blasts since it sent hundreds of troops into neighboring Somalia last year to tackle al-Qaeda-linked Islamist militants.

Police Commissioner Mathew Iteere said they also requested Kenya Power to check whether an electrical fault might have been at fault.

The blast shook buildings in the surrounding area and evacuation began.
