Muslim Brotherhood candidate Mohamed Morsi has won Egypt's presidential elections, the first since its uprising, Chairman of the Higher Presidential Elections Commission Farouk Sultan said on Sunday.
Morsi got 13,23 million votes which is 51.7 percent of total votes.
Morsi’s rival Ahmed Shafiq, who served as prime minister under ex-President Hosni Mubarak, got 12,35 million votes or 48.3 percent.
The results of the June 16-17 run-off vote were originally planned to be released on Thursday, but the Supreme Elections Commission said in a statement on Wednesday that it needed more time to examine some 400 reports of electoral violations received by the commission.
Voter turnout in the second round of presidential elections in Egypt was 51.85 percent, Farouk Sultan said.
“27.42 million voters or 51.85 percent voted in the second round of presidential election,” Farouk Sultan said.
Thus more people voted in the second round of presidential election that was held on June 16, 17 than in the first round on May 23, 24 (46 percent).
