Neil Armstrong, the world’s first moonwalker, has undergone cardiac bypass surgery and is "doing great," U.S. media have reported, quoting the former NASA astronaut’s wife.

Armstrong, 82, went to a hospital on Monday for a stress test and failed. He was admitted into the hospital where surgeons bypassed four blockages in his coronary arteries on Tuesday, NBC said on its website on Thursday.

Armstrong commanded the Apollo 11 spaceship that landed on the moon on July 20, 1969. He became the first human to step onto the lunar surface and spent nearly three hours on a moonwalk with fellow astronaut Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin.

NASA Administrator Charles Bolden wished Armstrong a good recovery in a statement posted on the U.S. space agency’s Facebook page.

"NASA wishes Neil Armstrong the very best for a quick recovery from surgery," Bolden said.

"Neil's pioneering spirit will surely serve him well in this challenging time and the entire NASA Family is holding the Armstrong family in our thoughts and prayers. I know countless well-wishers around the world join us in sending get well wishes to this true American hero,” the statement reads.
