The Swedish Embassy in Minsk has issued an advisory to Swedes in Belarus after receiving a number of anonymous threats, the embassy said on its website.

“The Swedish Embassy has received threats against Swedish citizens currently in Belarus,” the statement says.

“Due to recent events, including the expulsion of the Swedish Ambassador in Belarus, there are grounds for Swedes to be particularly careful and cautious when traveling and staying in the country,” the statement says.

The row between Belarus and Sweden erupted last month after a plane hired by a Swedish organization dropped hundreds of teddy bears with pro-democracy messages over the former Soviet republic. The stunt led to the expulsion of Swedish diplomats from Minsk.

The embassy advises Swedish nationals in Belarus to maintain a low profile and avoid displaying Swedish national symbols.

Belarus has also withdrawn all of its embassy staff from Stockholm.
